![]() The matriarch is also responsible for teaching the younger members of her family how to socialize with other elephants.Įlephants are very social and can communicate with one another and identify other elephants from distances of up to 2 miles using rumbling, low-pitched sounds that fall below the audible range of humans, according to the National Zoo.Įlephants readily show good manners to members within its herd and other herds, according to the San Diego Zoo. The matriarch relies on her experience and memory to recall where the best spots for food, water are, and where to find protection from the elements. When the family gets too large, herds often split into smaller groups that stay within the same area. Herds are composed of primarily female family members and young calves, according to the San Diego Zoo, and include 6 to 20 members depending on the food supply. Groups of elephants, or herds, follow a matriarchal structure with the eldest female in charge. They spend about about 16 hours eating, consuming anywhere from 165 to 330 lbs. īoth species eat all types of vegetation, including a variety of grasses, fruits, leaves, bark and roots. Their dominant tusk is easy to identify, because it will be more worn down than the less dominant tusk, according to the World Wildlife Fund. In the same way that humans tend to be right-handed or left-handed, elephants can be right-tusked or left-tusked. Tusks are large, deeply rooted teeth that evolved to assist the elephant in digging, lifting, gathering food, and defense while also protecting the trunk, according to World Wildlife Fund. But typically, only male Asian elephants will grow large tusks, while the females and a few males have much smaller tusks called tushes that don't always grow outside the mouth. Asian elephants have a single "finger" on the end of their trucks. This cake marks the beginning of a different type of cake art which I intend to explore and develop in future cakes. The ears of African elephant are larger and resemble the shape of the African continent, while Asian elephants have smaller, rounder ears, according to the San Diego Zoo.īoth male and female African elephants have large tusks and two "fingers" on the end of their trunks to help them pick items up. In front of the cake is the name of the celebrant and above his name is a rodent peeking out of a hole on the tree trunk. To the right of the cake are a pair of button mushrooms and a runner with a few flowers. I intend to call the cake “Hedgehog Colony Cake.” Tutorial for how to make these hedgehogs can be found here. I am in the process of making another tree stump cake which would be all about these hedgehogs. A hedgehog is partially out of a hole on the base of the tree stump while another is climbing up the stump with the aid of a rope pegged on top of the stump. They were made entirely of marshmallow fondant. I guess its because they are just so cute. Surprisingly, a lot of people who saw this cake fell in love with the hedgehogs which were meant to only be a minute part of the cake. This was also the first time I was trying this technique and I hope to use it in other cakes in the future. The tree stump is sitting in a cake board which I covered with fondant, made some indentations with a ball toll and painted green. I had a few rough moments but in the end, it came out beautifully. I first of all made the top of the stump and later covered the sides with fondant and made markings on it. This was the first time I was using this technique for making a tree stump. ![]() A pictorial on how to make these elephants can be found here. On elephant is sited on the cake while the other is partially submerged in a pool of water in front of the cake. The elephants are the focal point of this cake and instead of making a simplified elephant, I decided to go with more complicated fondant elephants. All the designes on the cake were made with marshmallow fondant. The cake is the actual tree stump which consists of a 10 inch French vanilla sponge frosted with vanilla buttercream. It is such an interesting cake which has a lot going on. Subsequently I felt elephants on a stump made more sense and that’s how this cake was conceived. I first settled for a drum with elephants on and around it. His dad had no idea about what he wanted, neither did the celebrant. This is a cake I thought about while trying to decide on what to make for a 2 year old’s birthday party. ![]()
